Father JJ Bernal and Deacon Sandy Herder stand with 22 Fire Bibles and 6 Spanish language Bibles purchased by the Outreach Committee in June for the Ford County Jail Ministry. Bibles to be distributed to any Ford County Jail inmate who wants one. Stickers were affixed inside each cover that read "This Bible belongs to a beloved child of God from your brothers and sisters at St Cornelius Episcopal Church in Dodge City, Ks." There was room on the sticker for the recipient to write his/her name. Photo published in Dodge Globe on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Photo by Lanny Gerber.
At St. Cornelius' Episcopal Church, we are committed to serving our community and sharing the love of Christ. We believe that everyone is welcome in our church, and we strive to create a safe and inclusive space for all people.
The Outreach Committee, consisting of Deacon Sandy Herder, Tom Taylor,
Terri Trent, and Jan Scoggins, have decided to enroll in the Care
Portal. In July, committee members attended a Zoom training and
orientation and completed the enrollment process.
The Care Portal is a nonprofit online organization that links
professional care providers such as caseworkers for the Kansas Department
for Children and Families, and St Francis Ministries with local churches
and businesses. Caseworkers can enter requests for needs for their
clients. Enrolled churches and community businesses can look at these
requests and decide if they have the means to provide the help needed.
All requests have a child at the center of the need. Examples of
previous requests have included a washing machine for a family. Another
request was for a backup generator for a family with a child on life
support.
The advantage of Care Portal is that needs and families are evaluated by
a professional caseworker before being posted. There is a caseworker who
continues to be involved with the family and provides a link between the
responding church or business and the family. We have an opportunity to
establish a relationship with the family we help. That relationship can
include our prayers as a community for someone we know.
As the Outreach Committee continues to provide ministry to those in
need, we ask for your prayers for discernment. We may also add the names
of those in need to our community prayers. We ask you to pray for them.
